The year 2013 was marked by remarkable advancements in technology and science. While some inventions faded into obscurity, others left a mark on history, such as memory implantation, prenatal DNA sequencing, deep learning for computers, and the development of lab-grown body parts.
One particularly ambitious project began on September 12, 2013, under the direction of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The aim was to address world hunger, combat climate change, and expand usable land. In the initial two months, the five leading scientists made significant progress. However, their differing ethical views and priorities soon led to conflicts, ultimately derailing the research.
Interest in the nearly abandoned project was reignited when the Russian government stepped in. With new funding and a focused goal of increasing farmland within Russia, the project gained momentum once more. The scientists, driven by the looming pressure of governmental expectations, set aside their differences to meet the demanding pace required for success.
As December approached, the project neared completion. By Christmas, the final adjustments were made, and on the morning of December 30, 2013, the scientists proudly presented their work to the Russian government. With unanimous approval, the project was poised to launch the very next day.
However, New Year's Eve, intended to herald a new era of agricultural improvement in Russia, took a dark turn. Amidst the excitement of the project’s launch, one scientist had malevolent plans brewing. By the time his colleagues noticed his disappearance, it was far too late for humanity to avert disaster.
The day many ominously referred to as 'Armageddon' marked the onset of a devastating disease that took the world by storm. It spread rapidly through Russia, swiftly engulfing neighboring countries, and soon reached distant shores within mere days. Larger nations, like the United States, managed to stave off the encroaching darkness for longer than their smaller counterparts. Yet, ultimately, the world and its governments succumbed to chaos before they could identify or contain this insidious threat.
Now, in October 2014, the survivors of Chernarus grapple with the grim reality of their new existence. Having been among the first to fall victim to the disease, they endure the aftermath of what they once believed to be its worst phase. Stripped of modern safety, resources, and leadership, the remaining few must navigate the treacherous landscape of a crumbling civilization, all while contending with the fragile sanity of the uninfected.
As the fate of humanity hangs precariously in the balance, the question looms: will the remnants of the human race unite to survive, adapt, and ultimately overcome their near extinction? Or will desperation lead them to turn against one another, sealing their doom?
Only time will unveil their stories...
